22/01 - COMECE participated in the Article 17 TFEU Annual High-Level meeting between the European Commission and religious leaders on the theme “The European Way of Life in times of instability”. The meeting was hosted by Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission and responsible for Article 17 TFEU Dialogue. The COMECE delegation was composed of Mgr. Mariano Crociata, President, and Mgr. Theodorus C.M. Hoogenboom, President of the Legal Affairs Commission.

NEWS | European Churches meet with the Belgian EU Presidency

COMECE and CEC meeting with Belgian ambassador
22/01 - An ecumenical COMECE-CEC delegation met with Ambassador Willem van de Voorde, Permanent Representative of Belgium to the EU, to discuss the priorities of the Belgian EU Presidency. The meeting was a fruitful occasion to present and share Churches’ contributions to the main policy areas of the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council.

24/11 - During the launch of 'Osservatorio su Enti Religiosi Patrimonio Ecclesiastico e Organizzazioni No-Profit', the President of COMECE, Mgr. Mariano Crociata, supported the idea of including religious organisations in the Directive on the European Cross-Border Associations (ECBA), which was recently proposed by the European Commission.

24/12 - COMECE actively participated in the Dialop Transversal Dialogue Conference on Integral Ecology held in Loppiano (Italy). General Secretary Fr. Barrios Prieto: “The Church needs today to be prophetic in the real sense of the word, reading the signs of the times, raising awareness, making the cry of the poor her own and calling for repentance and radical change”.

NEWS | European Commission recognises the crucial role of young people in EU policymaking

18/01 - The European Commission unveiled its Communication on the legacy of the 2022 European Year of Youth, a pivotal document set to determine the course of action in the area of youth policy in the next years. COMECE: “It is important that the EU recognises the crucial role of young people in policymaking and strengthens intergenerational dialogue at all levels of its action, especially in light of the European elections this year”.

12/12 - COMECE launched its Internship Programme for Fall 2024, aiming to offer participants a comprehensive understanding of the European Union policy and decision-making processes, along with honing their advocacy skills.
Interns will have the chance to immerse themselves in the dynamic world of EU policy, gaining insights into the complexities of decision-making and contributing to the advocacy efforts of COMECE.
The placement is designed for a flexible duration, allowing interns to engage for a minimum of 3 months and up to a maximum of 5 months. The internship is set to begin in September 2024. Applications will be accepted until 16 February 2024.

The event is organised by the Ludwig Maximilian University (Munich), the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv) and the University of Notre Dame (USA).

13 February
Secretary General Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto will participate in an Article 17 TFEU dialogue meeting to be held at the European Parliament. The meeting will focus on disinformation and foreign interference in view of the EU elections.

14 February
COMECE organises the event “The role of Churches and faith-based organisations in fighting trafficking in human beings” to be held at the European Parliament (Room A5F385). The conference is sponsored by MEP Juan Ignacio Zoido Alvarez (EPP – Spain). More details will be shared in the next days.

16 February
H.E. Mgr. Mariano Crociata will preside over the monthly Standing Committee meeting.

19-21 February
H.E. Mgr. Aegidius Zsifkovics, Bishop of Eisenstadt, will visit Brussels to meet with various EU representatives. The visit will also be an occasion to meet with the staff of the Secretariat of COMECE. He will be accompanied by a group of Austrian journalists.

23-25 February
Adviser Emilio Dogliani will participate in the Congress on Catholic Education to be held in Madrid, Spain.

26 February
COMECE will host the yearly meeting of the Brussels-based Catholic organisations working with the EU institutions.

29 February-1 March
H.E. Mgr. Theodorus C.M. Hoogenboom will preside over the COMECE Legal Affairs Commission. On this occasion, the members of the Commission will also visit the EU Court of Justice, Luxembourg, and exchange with some of its judges.
